October 19-20 St. Petersburg hosted the first official world championship on mixed martial arts (MMA). The official partner of the Ukrainian team was the “InterChem” company.<\/p>\n
The competition was attended by more than a hundred athletes from 35 countries. Finalists received not only honorary medals and diplomas, as well as, for the first time in the history of fighting, were also awarded with special championship belt.<\/p>\n
In a tense struggle Ukrainian team won two medals: Oleg Khachaturov won the silver medal in the weight category up to 70.3 kg, and Taras Gutsul ranked third among the athletes up to 65.8 kg.<\/p>\n

Despite the increasing popularity and rich history originating in ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, MMA were recognized as an official sport only in 2013, a year after the founding of the World Association of Mixed Martial Arts, which was the organizer of the championship.<\/p>\n
