Sildenafil citrate is a medical product used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is used for treatment of erectile dysfunction which is defined as an inability to achieve and maintain an erection of the penis, necessary for successful sexual intercourse. Sildenafil has no direct relaxing effect on isolated human corpus cavernosum but enhances the effectiveness of nitric oxide (NO), inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) which is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the cavernous body, resulting in smooth muscle relaxation occurs and increases blood flow to the cavernous body.
